Over
the past few years, the concept of video conferencing is brought in
the fields of justice. The power of Internet is harnessing the
lawyers to stay connected with their clients who are based in
far-flung corners of the province. In this case both the lawyer and
the prisoner are benefited in saving time and cost of travel.
It
is a fact that there are some people whose family members are
spending time in Jails. Some jails no longer permit in -person
visitors to visit the prisoners. In this situations it is served as
interface between inmates and their loved ones. This solution is an
effectual, secured and cost effective option to travelling for
visitation, court hearings and consolidations.
In
India, the integration of video conferencing in jails is been
popularized in the recent years. There are lot of prisons around
India where the conferencing solution is being executed.
The
following are the few cases regarding the Indian jails which are
integrated with the video conferencing solution:
Andhra
Pradesh:
Andhra
Pradesh is the first state in India to implement Video Conferencing
solution. The links of video interaction are established between the
Chanchalguda jail and Nampally City Criminal Courts. In this case the
web conferencing solution is implemented to submit the accused to the
magistrate court through virtual platform. By sitting in Nampally
city criminal court complex, the chief justice and some other judges
have conducted an interaction with some of the remand prisoners on a
trail basis. These under trails were successful in early disposal of
the cases. This scenario also provided a platform where the lawyers
and the accused can freely interact with the magistrate. When the
accused is presented to the court in-person, there are lot of
pessimal concerns in terms of high end security for the accused, long
waits at the court premises.
Odisha:
In
consideration with the shortage of escorts, the government of Odisha
have planned to integrate a video conferencing in district courts, so
as to eliminate the need for physically producing the accused to the
district court. As of now the facility of conferencing has been
integrated over eight major jails in Choudwar, Rourkela, Bhubaneswar,
Balangir, Berhampur, Baripada, Sambalpur and koraput. Through the
implementation of the video conferencing, the pressure on the local
police for escorting the prisoner has been drastically reduced. This
solution also cut down the vulnerabilities like escaping attempts of
the accused.
